Dear Leslie Speaker friends,
Do you find that your vintage Jensen V21 lack a little bit of tone and body while being a bit too thin sounding in your Leslie cabinet??
The problem with the V21 is the fact that not only are they fragile and buzz easily, but it seems almost impossible for this driver to produce the really deep fat and thick Leslie sound that we all love!
Have you ever tried to duplicate the FAT and THICK sound Paul Shaffer Leslie makes with your stock Leslie?
Did you ever try to set the drawbars, so that you can get a better sound without much success?
The truth is: If you own a vintage Leslie with a vintage treble driver or any modern Leslie speaker equipped with modern OEM replacement driver, you are probably wasting time moving drawbars to get that rich and thick Leslie tone...
On the other hand, if you have tried other Leslie OEM replacement treble driver you have probably been disappointed by the harsh and shrill high-end treble response of these drivers.
For some reason, Hammond-Suzuki could never come up with a driver that sounded warm enough with the appropriate amount of key click to be acceptable in a Leslie speaker.
If you listen to these OEM drivers and pay attention to the tone they produce, you will soon realize that they have too much of a sharp high-end response that simply breaks the quality of the sound!
So, do you think that I'm exaggerating?
Install any Ferro-Fluid driver in your Leslie and just pull out one treble drawbar out, and you will hear the tone that this driver will give you...
The sound that you will hear will NOT be pure and it will be deteriorated by the high-end response of the driver itself. It is so sharp, to me it sounds like the driver reproduce each tooth of the wheel passing in front of the pick-up...
I personally qualify that as 'grainy' or 'spiky' sounding.
But don't just take my word for it, just ask the hundreds of people I have taught how much better their Hammonds and Leslie sound now!
My 16 Years of Experience with Leslies Yours Risk-Free!
I own a Hammond B3 and a Leslie 122 since 1997 and I must admit that I am a sound freak. So often I have been disappointed with the sound of my organ and Leslie and that's this frustration pushed me in experiencing a lot of things.
As an example, I have been recalibrating my own tone generator dozens of times and I must have bought and tested all the treble driver that I could possibly install in a Leslie cabinet. I started to work on Hammond organs and Leslies around 1994.
Since 2007 I have helped many hundreds of people around the world in their restoration project thru many different publications.
Since 2008 I am a proud published author of the popular title: "Hammond B-3 and Leslie 122/147 Easy Improvement and Restoration Tips For NON Technicians"".
If you are on this page it probably means that you are experiencing the same problems that I have had with my various treble drivers...
Here is the major problems that I came across in my venture...
The Jensen V21 is an overall good warm sounding driver but the problem with it is obviously the lack of low end depth and body.
The OEM replacement treble drivers that I bought were way too bright and they just destroy the sound...
For me it always been a matter of unbalanced between thickness and body and treble response. Let me list some of them here:
In other words, no single vintage driver or OEM parts could give me full satisfaction...
Believe me, I've been in the EXACT same spot you're in right now...
I remember trying to get that FULL BODIED and FAT Leslie sound heard on my favourite Rock recordings without ever reaching "THE" sound I wanted.
I was pulling out the same drawbars as my favourites organists but this organ was FAR from sounding the same... At first I thought they had special drawbar settings but after checking their settings I was wrong!
These guys were just using the same basic drawbar stops that I was using!
So I knew the secret was not about the drawbars, it had to be something wrong with the way my Leslie was voiced by the speakers...
"With the PD60A Driver You'll Get a DEEPER and FAT Leslie Sound...
Plus...
...The Treble Will Be Thicker and PURE Without the Annoying Exaggerated Brilliance Found On so MANY OEM Drivers"
Here is a list of the benefits this package will provide for you...
Like explained above, the PD60A has a thicker tone and provide you with a lot more body than any Jensen V21.
This 16 ohm 60 watt speaker is ideal if you want to enjoy more power handling and reliability from your Leslie cabinet. As you already know, the Jensen V21 is really fragile and they buzz easily under heavy demands. It is not a problem with the PD60A!
Like we mentioned before the V21 is really fragile and can buzz really easily. On the other end all the modern Leslie treble driver have way too much high-end response and key click.
Hours and hours of A/B testing and tweaking exposed ways to get the best sound in a Leslie speaker with the this driver. You can NOT get the most out of a standard PD60A in a Leslie if you buy a standard PD60A.
To Properly Mount the PD60A Driver We Strongly Recommend Our Custom Designed Adapter Plate.
